Gateway North East

Gateway North East-UK is a registered charity originally set up by young people with a Disability and their parents/carers in Sunderland, known as Sunderland Gateway, and in North Durham as Wear Mencap. The name was later changed to Gateway North East, with Wear Mencap becoming a separately constituted group.

Its aim is to provide appropriate leisure, life, recreational and educational opportunities to young people with Disabilities or barriers to learning, young carers and their families.

Through this partnership, several children with intellectual and developmental Disabilities in Special Needs Schools across Greater Accra and Central Regions have benefitted from the provision of tables, school uniforms, educational/learning materials, school bags, shoes, slippers, toiletries and food items. Beneficiary schools include:

  • Aboom Special School, Cape Coast, Central Region
  • Castle Road Special School, Adabraka, Greater Accra Region
  • The Epicentre Ghana, Gbawe, Greater Accra Region
