Community Outreach (Autism Awareness)

In some parts of Ghana, Autism is still attributed to witchcraft or a curse from the gods, with affected children and adults subjected to various forms of abuse and stereotyping. It is currently estimated that 1 in 87 children under the age of 3 years are affected, and Autism is known to be four times more prevalent in boys than in girls.

It is in the light of this that Hopeworks Ghana has partnered with Children's Oasis Foundation to embark on community outreach programs in an effort to promote the understanding, acceptance and awareness of Autism in Basic, Junior High, Senior High Schools and Churches in Ghana. The education is led by a special team from Children's Oasis Foundation, Texas, USA. Ahantaman Girls Senior High School and Assemblies of God Churches are among the schools and churches that have benefitted.
